Project: Where Are the Seas?  

Where Art the Seas? is een land art-installatie die je uitnodigt om te reflecteren op onze kwetsbare relatie met de natuur.  

De boeg van een twee meter lange boot lijkt vanuit de aarde naar boven te komen en raakt langzaam overwoekerd door planten. Poëzie en watergeluiden maken de installatie tot een plek voor bezinning over hoe we opnieuw kunnen samenleven met de wereld en met elkaar. Een beeld van verval én mogelijke samensmelting met de natuur.  

Het kunstwerk herinnert aan vergeten geschiedenissen, zoals de Zuiderzeevloed van 1916 en verdwenen maritieme culturen, en wil je laten nadenken over koloniale en ecologische systemen.

James Notin is een Yoruba-Nigeriaanse kunstenaar die met performance, installaties en interactieve literatuur onderzoekt hoe sociale structuren ons dagelijks leven beïnvloeden. Vanuit het perspectief van een buitenstaander legt hen de link tussen persoonlijke ervaringen, maatschappelijke vraagstukken en onze angsten voor de toekomst. Momenteel is Notin artist-in-residence bij de Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht en lid van het Tantdile Xperimenta Lab.

Project: Where Are the Seas?

Where Are the Seas? is a land art installation that invites you to reflect on our delicate relationship with nature.

A two-meter boat prow rises from the earth, slowly being taken over by plants—a symbol of both decay and the possibility of harmony with the natural world. The work remembers forgotten histories, like the devastating 1916 flood and lost maritime cultures, while inviting reflection on colonial and environmental systems.

Accompanied by poetry and the sound of water, the installation invites you to pause and consider how we might live more thoughtfully with the world and each other. 

Bio

James Notin (1995, NG) is a Yoruba-Nigerian experimental artist who uses performance, installation, and interactive writing to explore how social structures shape our lives. Their work creates spaces for dialogue about politics and society, often looking at the world from an outsider’s perspective. By treating humanity as an organism marked by anxieties about the future, Notin shifts the focus back to personal experience and the present moment. They are currently an artist-in-residence at the Jan van Eyck Academie and a member of Tantdile Xperimenta Lab.
